Hotel Spa staff at the George Washington hotel are hitting the gym for a North East charity in October and inviting guests and visitors to join them for free.
The Montana Spa leisure and fitness team plan a week of sponsored gym work at the hotel in Washington, starting on Monday, October 12th in order to raise money for local heart charity, the Red Sky Foundation.
And they want as many people in the Washington area and beyond to join them and choose their favourite piece of gym equipment to contribute.
Sarah Foster, leisure manager for the Mercure George Washington Hotel, explained: “We’re looking at everyone doing 45 minutes of measured exercise at a time, for which people can get sponsored or make donations.
“They can use any machine they want to do that – it might be the treadmill or the stepper, cycling or the rowing machine; it might be swimming – whatever they feel comfortable with and we won’t’ charge them for the session.
“We’re running the fundraising drive all that week so that people can book their slots specifically and raise money for a great cause and we’d ask them to ring us directly on 0191 202 2411 to book their slot or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
“Our staff will be doing sessions all week and guests and visitors can do the same – we’re hoping that for people locally who need that extra little push to exercise, this could be the perfect incentive.
“That said, we’ve got no problem with the fit or even the super-fit coming along to do their bit too!”
“We’re hoping to raise hundreds of pounds for Red Sky Foundation’s life-saving equipment, which will help make a difference to the lives of people living with heart and circulatory diseases and we’ll be giving out prizes to those who do best.”
The charity’s founder, Sergio Petrucci, who attended the launch on World Heart Day this week, is urging everyone in the Washington area to join in and help raise money for lifesaving community defibrillators and cardiac machines for the region’s hospitals including the Children’s Heart Unit at the Freeman Hospital and the neonatal ward at Sunderland Royal.
He said: “This promises to be a great week at the hotel to support the work we do to help people needing cardio care.
“We’re incredibly grateful to everyone involved because this is a tough time for charity-fundraising, and we’re delighted The George chose us as their good cause.
“The money raised will help the Red Sky Foundation continue to fund equipment and machinery that could help save more people of all ages from the devastating effects of heart disease.
“There are currently thousands of people in the region fighting a daily battle with heart and circulatory disease – conditions which claim the lives of so many people each year and anything that can be done to help, really makes a difference.”
